Managing the Challenge

Most people with a chronic pain condition see a healthcare professional for as little as five hours per year. Our evidence-informed self-management programme helps you to support yourself in the remaining 8755 hours in the year.

Managing The Challenge

Since 2010, Action Mental Health has been successfully delivering Self-Management courses across the Western Health and Social Care Trust area for those experiencing chronic pain and conditions. Our programme is evidence-informed, using research-based techniques and strategies and has been designed to empower participants to successfully manage all aspects of living with a long term health condition and pain. We've created the programme with the help of healthcare professionals from the WHSCT with a wide range of knowledge and proven experience in providing support to those in pain.

“The course was fab. It was great for feeling that you belong and that there are others who suffer the same symptoms.”

“The trainer was a ray of sunshine on a dark and stormy day. Thanks for making a difference.”

The Managing the Challenge programme will help you manage your condition or pain more effectively. It will enable you to deal with pain, fatigue, anxiety and stress by giving you helpful techniques to move more, relax more easily, set goals, problem solve, breathe more effectively and improve your ability to talk about your pain to friends, family and healthcare professionals. Learning to manage your condition and/or pain will significantly improve your quality of life.

Courses are delivered by experienced, skilled and empathetic trainers, many who have personal experience of long term health conditions. The programme is currently being delivered in six weekly, 2.5 hour sessions face to face and remotely via Zoom. There is no cost for the training – it is free to anyone over 18, in the WHSCT area, who has a long term health condition or experiencing ongoing pain and is interested in learning new skills in self-managing their condition or pain.

You can find further information regarding our Pain Self-Management Courses from April to June 2024 below. Pain management courses: October-December 2024
