Action Mental Health New Horizons, which helps people to overcome the effects of mental ill health and in many cases return to work, received a grant of £9,260 through the Culture for All funding programme, delivered and funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Big Lottery Fund in partnership with Culture Company 2013.
The ‘What’s Your Story’ project will see the creation of an art piece in the form of a two-seater sofa made out of 2013 literary and music books donated by people from across Northern Ireland. As such, the art piece will reflect literary and musical cultures across the generations with all the donated books sharing a link through cultural heritage. The finished art piece sofa will be transportable and will tour throughout Northern Ireland in the UK City of Culture year.
The Met Office had issued amber warnings for rain, yet despite the weather forcing other sporting events to be cancelled – the Stormont Steeplechase went ahead and there was a great turn-out. Fun runners were joined by runners from East Down AC, North Down AC, St Peters AC, Orangegrove AC and Co Antrim Harriers to take part in the first ever AMH Steeplechase.
The event was organised by East Down Athletic Club, with all proceeds going to AMH.
There were two distances – the Fun Chase was a 2 mile loop in Stormont Estate, with a few steep hills, lots of mud and the “jumps”. This race was won by East Down Athlete Chris O’Connor, with Ryan Betts coming in a close second (in fancy dress!) and Fergus McMullan taking third place.
The Fun Chase really was for everyone! – Tigger, Darth Vader, Batman …..
Joe Quinn congratulates winner of the Fun Chase Chris O’Connor (EDAC)
The main race was an 8k cross country steeplechase – 3 loops of the challenging Stormont course – and was a closely fought contest between 2 East Down Athletes. The lead changed numerous times during the course of the race with James Savage (EDAC) eventually being named the victor in a time of 34.44, with his club mate Mark McDowell coming in second in 34.55. North Down Athlete Terry Eakin was third in a time of 38.04. The ladies race was won by Ali Robinson from North Down AC in 38.51. Natalie Thompson was second (41.50) and Joan Melanophy from St Peters AC was third (43.52). There were prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Men and Ladies Races and medals and sweets for everyone who took part in the fun chase.
Winner of the Steeplechase James Savage (EDAC) had Mark McDowell (EDAC) hot on his heels for the entire race
Despite the rain – which didn’t dampen the enthusiasm and spirits of the competitors, everyone agreed that it was a really fun event, with plans in the pipeline to hold another running event in the very near future. Thanks to Joe Quinn and the East Down Athletics club for organising the event and to everyone who took part and raised lots of money for AMH. Thank you also for the volunteers who helped out on the day.

Action Mental Health New Horizons has received a grant of £9,260 through the Culture for All funding programme, delivered and funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Big Lottery Fund in partnership with Culture Company 2013.
AMH New Horizons, which helps people to overcome the effects of mental ill health and in many cases return to work, is using the funding for their new project entitled, ‘What’s Your Story’.
BBC Writer in Residence at Queen’s University, Malachi O’Doherty, has made his living mostly as a freelance journalist and broadcaster reporting and commenting on the Troubles and the Peace Process. He is a supporter of Action Mental Health and supported the launch of the project.
Action Mental Heath’s Mickie Harkin said;
“We started thinking about how we could mark the City of Culture year in a socially inclusive way that would get as many people involved as possible. We hope the ‘What’s Your Story’ project will reflect the importance of literature to our city while people from across Northern Ireland can get involved by contributing their favourite books. Everyone has old books at home that maybe they read as a child and are now just sitting on a shelf or a cupboard. We are after as many books as possible and it would be great if, through this project, we can reflect the influence that literature has had.”
Damian Smyth, Head of Drama and Literature at the Arts Council said, “We always knew that books were useful! Now you can read them, enjoy them, remember them fondly – and then sit on them.”
Action Mental Health is calling on people from throughout Northern Ireland to donate their favourite books in order to create the sofa and take it on a unique voyage across the country. The regional Action Mental Health offices that are dotted around the country will act as collection points for those wishing to contribute their favourite books.
The Culture for All programme will bring people together to enjoy a range of community based arts and culture activities that link to the UK City of Culture. As the City of Culture, Derry~Londonderry will play host throughout 2013 to a year-long celebration of culture for local people and visitors from across the globe.
